They Said It Couldn't Be Done! The quest
for human-powered flight
Popular Science | earthWatch@1WORLDCommunity

Da Vinci sketched the oldest known plans for a human-powered aircraft in 1485. Yet it wasn’t until 1977 that the first one truly flew. Flight requires lift, when the net air pressure pushing upward counteracts the craft’s weight. For years, many assumed that flight required more lift and more power than the human body alone could provide (although the admonitions did little to stop myriad failed attempts). But inventors persisted. Aircraft fly using three basic configurations: fixed wing, flapping wing, and rotors. In the last 50 years, inventors have conquered fixed-wing and flapping flight. Now they are on the verge of overcoming the greatest challenge yet: vertical take-off.

To fly a human-powered helicopter, a pilot would likely have to produce 500 watts of power. Even the fittest pilot could not sustain that ‘output’, says Antonio Filippone, an aeronautical engineer at the University of Manchester in England who has published two papers analyzing theoretical human-powered helicopters. “You can lift off,” he says, “But for more than a few seconds, it is not possible.” We’ve heard that sort of thing before.

Terbang seperti burung - Kami melakukannya! Nikmat! (Flying like a bird - We did it! This weekend I flew a 100 meters with my selfbuilt wings. I used a GoPro-camera on my helmet to film the flight.  I have always dreamed about this. But after 8 months of hard work, research and testing it all payed off. Enjoy)!

Orang Belanda (Dutchman)  kepak tangan & terbang Nya . . .

Dutchman Flaps His Arms And Flies - Jarno Smeets has been working for several months on his Human Bird Wings project -- assembling long nylon wings powered by outrunner motors. Wii arm-waving control system -- and now -- according to the video he's just published -- they work! Man can fly! Some people are somewhat skeptical that little motors, shallow flapping, and trotting along a flat field are enough to launch a tall Dutchman into the air. You can watch the video and let us know what you think.

ORNITHOPTER - mengepak sayap penerbangan . . .

New Picture 53
Snowbird/BurungSalji: Klik di sini untuk melihat imej ini yang menakjubkan yang lebih besar (Click here to see this amazing image even larger.)

ORNITHOPTER - Flapping-wing flight: The Challenge: Small animals such as hummingbirds beat their wings fast enough to stay aloft entirely from flapping, pushing more air down than they do up and creating a net upward pressure. But at large scales, it’s difficult to beat quickly enough to remain in the air. Bigger flappers, therefore, require a boost from forward thrust. Think of an engine pushing forward a flapping-wing plane,  ornithopter.

The Solution: Larger birds’ wings flap, but they also twist forward and back as if jiggling a doorknob, which generates extra forward thrust. So as a graduate student at the University of Toronto, aeronautical engineer Todd Reichert and fellow students designed their craft, named Snowbird, with wings that both flap up and down and twist 10 degrees. They used computer simulations to fine-tune their design. And they gave Snowbird a wide, 105-foot wingspan and employed carbon fibre and Kevlar to keep it light. A person generates power in the 94-pound craft using a leg press similar to those found in gyms.

On August 2, 2010, on a field in Ontario, a car towed the craft forward until it glided into the air. Then the car stopped towing. As Reichert worked the leg press, the Snowbird flapped its wings and flew on its own at a height of 11 feet for 19.3 seconds, traveling 475 feet.

Pesawat Terbang - Penerbangan Sayap-tetap . . .

AIRPLANE - Fixed-wing flight: The Challenge: Fixed-wing flight requires an efficient airfoil, such as a wing that’s curved on top and flat on the bottom. As the airfoil moves forward, air streams faster over its top than underneath it, creating a difference in pressure. When the pressure below the craft overcomes the pressure above it, there is a net upward force. Most planes use engines to get enough forward motion, but people can’t propel a vehicle nearly as fast.

The Solution /Penyelesaian: Secara umum, lagi sayap, lif lagi.

The Solution: In general, the longer the wings, the more lift. In the early ’60s, Southampton University undergraduates built a 130-pound craft with an 80-foot-wingspan and a bicycle-style transmission connected to a propeller. It flew a third of a mile but had significant steering problems. In 1977, engineer Paul MacCready designed the Gossamer Condora 70-pound aluminium and plastic craft with a canard - an airfoil on a boom in front of the fuselage. It was more manoeuvrable than its predecessors and flew in a figure eight around markers a half-mile apart, winning the Royal Aeronautical Society’s prize for the first controlled and sustained human-powered flight. There’s still room for improvement. For example, engineers have refurbished the ’90s Airglow (seen above) with bent wingtips and curvier wings - improvements that stabilize it during turns.

HELIKOPTER - Berasaskan Penerbangan Pemutar . . .

HELICOPTER - Rotor-based flight: The Challenge: A helicopter flies when its spinning rotors force air down, which decreases air pressure above the craft and increases it below. Unlike planes and ornithopters, helicopters cannot rely on forward motion, making flight much more challenging. Helicopters also generate turbulence that can cause serious stability problems. Several teams are trying to prove that they can conquer vertical flight by winning the American Helicopter Society’s Sikorsky prize, a standing $250,000 award for a human-powered helicopter that hovers for one minute and hits a minimum altitude of three meters (9.8 feet), while staying within a 10-meter (33-foot) square.

The Contenders: The University of Maryland team’s Gamera II helicopter is a quadcopter, a craft with four 42.6-foot-wide rotors connected to a bicycle-like transmission. Several smaller rotors near the ground can lift off more easily than a single large one. They also balance one another for better stability. Each tweak to their design has yielded better results - in June, a pilot sat and pedalled with his hands and feet to raise the Gamera II about a foot off the ground for 49.9 seconds, and then in August, a pilot topped out at eight feet.

Aeronautical engineer Neal Saiki, who designed the first human-powered helicopter to lift off in 1989, is back with a new craft: theUpturn. A pilot pedals to spin its single, 85-foot-wide rotor with four blades, two of which have propellers at their ends, which help with stability. Each blade also has an adjustable flap and a sensor to detect vibration and balance, and Saiki’s software tweaks the flaps’ angles in real time to compensate for wobbles. In June, a pilot lifted the Upturn two feet for about 10 seconds.

The competition is still heating up. Snowbird co-designer Todd Reichert officially registered for the helicopter prize this July with a new group, but it hasn’t yet released a full design of its quadcopter. Maryland continues to improve its craft. Saiki aims to use a stronger pilot. And team gravity will be fighting all of them every step of the way.

Breaking News '300,000 gallons of diesel spill into water near New Jersey'

A major oil spill has occurred in the strait separating Staten Island, NYC and the state of New Jersey. The spill of some 300,000 gallons of diesel fuel is apparently related to the Superstorm Sandy aftermath. The incident occurred in the Arthur Kill tidal strait as fuel leaked from the Motiva oil tank facility, NBC New York reports citing the Coast Guard. Some 200 people are working to contain the spill. It remains unclear what caused it. Oil has already started to wash up on a nearby shore, according to authorities, with efforts being made to skim away some of the fuel.

Menduduki Sandy: ‘Orang bersatu berikutan kemusnahan superstorm’ . . .

The so-called 99 per cent have come together in the wake of Superstorm Sandy, with Occupy Wall Street using its grassroots strength to organize relief efforts and help those worst effected by the storm. Some 750,000 New Yorkers are still without power and at least 18 have been killed, as large swaths of New York City remain underwater. Starting in the Lower East side and moving through New York's five boroughs, OWS volunteers have teamed up with international environmental organization 350.org and people-powered disaster aid group recovers.org, to help bring together those in need with those wishing to aid the relief effort.

With social media as their beacon, OWS is using the limitless organizational power of the web to make a real impact on the ground with the help of local churches and city agencies. Occupy asked those wishing to get involved to tweet using the hashtag #SandyVolunteer and for those who need help to tweet using the hashtag #SandyAid. They have also set up a Facebook page to help coordinate logistical efforts. Volunteers are currently canvassing the streets for those in need, giving aid when possible and passing back information to Recovers.org who, via their online toolkit, will match needs with offers.

OWS has called on anyone with "experience in or tools for medical and psychological services, electrician work, plumbing, construction, financial or legal services, debris and tree removal, childcare, transportation, senior services or language skills" to sign up at one of three current sites in the Lower East Side in Manhattan, Red Hook in Brooklyn, and Astoria in Queens – all of which are along the waterfront and experienced flooding. Drop off points have also been established throughout Brooklyn for those able to donate candles, flashlights, batteries, water, food and other amenities.

They've also set up a pay portal for those wishing to make financial donations to help in the recovery efforts. The American Red Cross is also collecting donations, coordinating blood donations, and looking for volunteers to staff its shelters. The mayor's office has suggested the NYC Service be employed, a government initiative which coordinates volunteer efforts on a year-round basis. They have promised to notify volunteers once volunteering opportunities become available. "We've seen an enormous outpouring of support from people who want to volunteer & contribute", New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg wrote via Twitter in regards to NYC Service.

But he reserved the most praise for the city's first responders, whom he lauded for their "heroic efforts to protect New Yorkers" during the storm. "I can’t say enough about the extraordinary work of our first responders at the FDNY and NYPD, EMS, hospital workers, and more." Bloomberg said in spite of the monumental effort needed to get the city that never sleeps once again running at full clip, New York is "on the path to recovery."

Sinai hospital. Awal letupan berlaku di sebuah stesen kuasa Edison Con di Manhattan, New York, meninggalkan hampir 2 juta New York tanpa kuasa.

Hurricane hammers NY: 10 dead, houses destroyed
by fire, freak floods in subway . . .

Explosions, fires, and floods have devastated New York, killing at least ten people statewide. As Hurricane Sandy hit the city it left over 50 houses ablaze, at least seven subway tunnels flooded and nearly 2 million New Yorkers without power. Parts of Brooklyn, Manhattan and Staten Island are underwater as hurricane Sandy passes over New York. Much of the city is now without power, and mass transit has been shut down until further notice.

Sporadic explosions could be heard throughout the city. Emergency 911 operators were receiving 10,000 calls per half hour, NYC Mayor’s Office reported. Downed power lines had sparked numerous fires that continue to engulf the city. First reports of major fire were coming in from the Rockaway Park area of Queens, New York. A few hours later, fire engulfed 15 houses in Breezy Point, Queens, and 190 firefighters were on site battling the blaze. Fire has reportedly destroyed 50 houses.

Due to power outages and generator failure dozens of ambulances had to evacuate more than 200 patients from two Manhattan hospitals to Sloan Kettering and Mt. Sinai hospitals. Earlier an explosion took place at a Con Edison power station in Manhattan, New York, leaving nearly 2 million New Yorkers without power.

The streets of New York City filled with floodwater, which poured into NY’s subway tunnels and the World Trade Center site. According to New York's Metropolitan Transportation Authority this is worst disaster in the history of the NYC subway system. Sandy sent in a record storm surge of 13.7 feet (4.17m) into lower Manhattan, flooding seven New York subway tunnels. And it could take up to four days to get the water out of the flooded NY subway tunnels, according to Metro Transit Authority spokesman Kevin Ortiz. In lower Manhattan, utility workers were trapped for three hours by rising floodwaters inside a power substation and had to be rescued by firefighters in inflatable boats.
