Pantai Teluk Amerika Syarikat bersedia untuk Ribut Tropika Ishak, dijangka melanda New Orleans pada ulang tahun dahsyat Taufan Katrina. Presiden Obama telah menandatangani pengisytiharan kecemasan untuk Louisiana, meletakkan pasukan tindakan berjaga-jaga yang tinggi.

Ishak dijangka mempunyai angin hampir 100 kilometer sejam apabila ia mencecah di daratan, yang akan membuat ia Kategori 1 taufan. Trajektori semasa Ishak meletakkan New Orleans di laluannya. Amaran taufan dikeluarkan lebih 500 kilometer dari Louisiana ke barat Florida pada Isnin. Penduduk kawasan di pesisiran pantai telah dinasihatkan untuk mengosongkan hadapan ribut dan memberi amaran kemungkinan banjir dan gangguan elektrik.

New Orleans braces for Storm Isaac 

on Katrina anniversary . . .

The US Gulf Coast is preparing for Tropical Storm Isaac, projected to hit New Orleans on the anniversary of the devastating Hurricane Katrina. President Obama has signed an emergency declaration for Louisiana, placing response teams on high alert.

Isaac is expected to have winds of almost 100 miles per hour when it hits land, which would make it a Category 1 hurricane. Isaac's current trajectory puts New Orleans in its path. Hurricane warnings were issued over 500 kilometers from Louisiana to western Florida on Monday. Residents of the coastal areas were advised to evacuate ahead of the storm and warned of possible flooding and electrical outages.

President Barack Obama has declared a state of emergency in Louisiana, releasing federal funding for emergency activities. Louisiana governor, Bobby Jindal, said the state had already spent about $8 million on a variety of “emergency protective measures.”

The Federal Emergency Management Agency has placed response teams at crisis operations centers and has moved support teams into the areas where the storm could hit.

When Katrina hit on August 29, 2005, it was a Category 3 hurricane with winds over 125 miles per hour. The devastation claimed the lives of over 1,800 people, most dying when the New Orleans levee system failed, with surging storm waters flooding large areas of the city.

Since 2005, the levee system has been rebuilt with over $10 billion being spent on improvements, said Mike Stack, the Chief of Emergency Management for the US Army Corp of Engineers.

"The system is designed to withstand the 100 year effects, it’s in place, it’s ready to go, there is no indication right now that the system will have any trouble with this event," he said. Strom Isaac has already claimed 24 lives in the Dominican Republic and Haiti forcing tens of thousands to evacuate their homes over the weekend.

1WC’sChannel REVIEW 2012: RT News - ‘Esimit Europa 2 continues record unbeaten run’ There is only one maxi yacht in the world, which sails under the European flag. The Esimit Europa 2 is unbeaten since she was launched in 2010. However, its latest victory, in the Palermo to Monte-Carlo regatta, was probably the hardest.

This boat is essentially the best Europe has to offer. The most advanced and probably the fastest maxi-yacht has a multinational crew promoting the idea of European unity. Esimit Europa 2 has never tasted defeat since it first took to the water in 2010 smashing records as a matter of routine. On June 14, at the Giraglia Rolex Cup, the Esimit beat the previous record by over three hours with experts calling it the best ever sailing performance in the Mediterranean.

Now the brilliant blend of Europeans has gained some Russian flavor with Anton Sergeev making his debut in the Esimit crew in the Palermo to Monte-Carlo race, over the weekend. “It's a great honor for me to be Russia's representative on such an outstanding boat, shoulder to shoulder with the likes of [skipper] Jochen Shumann and [navigator] Juan Vila, who are sailing's cream of the crop. This is a great chance for all of us to bring our skills together, and reach the top,” says Sergeev.

The first race for the Russian was expected to be a real challenge for the whole team, as the weather conditions were far from perfect. “Unfortunately, we expect quite a light breeze. So it will be a big question if we should go to the west side of Sardinia-Corsica or the east side, or go through the middle. There are a lot of strategic options and we're obviously following the weather reports,” Shumann reflected before the race.

And the race proved to be one of the hardest tests for the Esimit team. Escaping the dead calms, Jochen Shumann's crew tried a brand new route near the Italian coast, which gave the yacht the lead in the dying minutes just 20 miles from the finishing line in Monte Carlo.

“It was a long one we knew it would not be a record. Actually, we trusted our forecast to go along the Italian coast. We made a very early decision to split to the right. And then we realized soon on the track that nobody else got,” says Shumann. The risky tactic proved to be the winner with the team's victorious record remaining intact.

In the meantime, Esimit Europa 2 is once again challenging the elements on the course between Monaco and Porto Cervo, near Sardinia. This time the team of outstanding Europeans is going all out to beat another record set in 2003.

A Syrian helicopter engulfed in flames has crashed in eastern Damascus on Monday amid witness reports of shelling and fierce fighting in the area. Syrian State television confirmed the helicopter came down near a mosque in the district of Al-Qabun, but gave no further information. The video footage shows the helicopter ablaze after it was hit by a projectile during a burst of gunfire.

Syrian rebels claim to have shot down the chopper. A Free Syrian Army brigade claimed it brought down the helicopter in revenge for the Daraya “massacre”, Al Arabiya news channel reported on Twitter. The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) said 320 people were killed throughout five days of intense clashes in the small Sunni Muslim town Daraya, a suburb of Damascus, with many allegedly dying in house-to-house raids on Saturday. 

Officials have denied the “massacre” accusations. Syrian government newspaper Ath-Thawra reported on Sunday that the armed forces "cleared the town of Daraya of the remnants of armed terrorist groups, who committed crimes that traumatized the citizens of the town and destroyed public and private property." Daraya has become the focal point of the government offensive to further drive rebels from the area, though fighting erupted on the outer edges of the capital as well.   Meanwhile, some experts suggest that the “massacre” outcry can be an orchestrated PR event“designed to sneer the government in Damascus and prod the West into intervening in Syria,” as Middle East expert Kevin Barrett told RT.

He recalled that the UN Security Council is scheduled to hold ministerial meeting on the humanitarian impact of the Syrian conflict on August 30.

Tehran hosts Non-Aligned Movement summit with 

focus on Syria . . .

Leaders of 120 countries have gathered in Tehran to attend 16th summit of the Non-Aligned Movement. Summit host Iran is expected to draw up a new peace resolution to solve the crisis in Syria. Nuclear disarmament issues are also on the table. The Non-Aligned Movement represents practically two-thirds of UN member states. The movement was founded in 1961 and has become a significant discussion platform for developing countries of Africa, Asia, and Latin America.

Among many global topics to be discussed at this summit are human rights and nuclear disarmament issues that have been specified in advance. At the Tehran summit Iran will take over the leadership role in the Non-Aligned Movement from Egypt for the next three years, meaning Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi is definitely heading to Tehran this week.

A number of controversies surround the start of the gathering. The first is that the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon is expected to attend the six-day summit, despite protests from the US and Israel, which both called on to the UN head to stay away from the event. Another relates to Palestine as two leaders, President Mahmoud Abbas and Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, have both declared they received and accepted the Iranian invitation.

President Abbas, leader of the secular Fatah Palestinian organization, has threatened to boycott the summit if Hamas attends. Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki proclaimed that "President Abbas will not take part in the Non-Aligned summit if Haniyeh is present, no matter what form his attendance takes." Prime Minister of Palestine Salam Fayyad called the Iranian move a "stab in the back of the Palestinian national project."

Hamas announced earlier that Haniyeh would attend the August 30-31 conference in Tehran "in accordance with the invitation from Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad,” a Hamas spokesperson said. However, on Sunday Iran made a statement that the Hamas premier in Gaza was never issued an invitation. “Up to now, no official invitation from the Islamic Republic of Iran and the person of (President Mahmoud) Ahmadinejad has been sent to Hamas’ popular prime minister [Ismail Haniya],” said the Iranian spokesman for the summit.

“Only [Palestinian president] Mahmud Abbas has been invited to the NAM summit," the spokesman for the organizing committee of the summit Mohammad Reza Forqani told the Iranian Students' News Agency (ISNA) and Mehr (MNA) Iranian news agencies Tehran regards Islamist Hamas as a legitimate government of the Palestinians. Asia Times roving correspondent Pepe Escobar told RT that the meeting unites the real international community trying to tackle problems such as the Iranian nuclear dossier and the war in Syria.

“Just look at the map. It’s very simple. Who is in Tehran at the moment? I would say it’s the real international community. Central America, including Cuba, most of South America, virtually the whole of Africa, the Middle East, Iraq and Afghanistan, India and Pakistan, South East Asia. And we have as observers Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and China,” he said. Escobar also noted that Western coverage of the event is absolutely disproportionate to its importance, ranging “from pathetic to absurd.”

“They only talk about Iran trying to boost its credentials and show that it’s not isolated. You know, it was never isolated in the first place! This is a figment of the imagination of the Obama administration, the European allies, and the GCC petro-monarchies in the Middle East.”
